DMCA / Copyright Policy

DMCA / Copyright Policy — NameLibrary respects intellectual property rights and expects the same from users and contributors. This policy explains how to submit a copyright (DMCA) notice, how we handle claims, and how to contact us about content on namelibrary.org.

1) Our approach to copyright

NameLibrary publishes original reference-style content about human names (meaning, origin, pronunciation, variants, and cultural context). We do not intend to reproduce copyrighted material beyond what is permitted by law. If you believe material on this site infringes your copyright, we take it seriously and will review it promptly.

2) What may appear on NameLibrary

  • Original writing: most text on NameLibrary is written specifically for this site.
  • Short quotations: occasionally, brief excerpts may be used for context, attribution, or commentary when appropriate and legally permitted.
  • User submissions: visitors may submit corrections or name information. We may edit submissions for clarity and we do not accept copied copyrighted passages.

If you see a long copied passage, assume it is a mistake, not a goal. Please report it.

3) Before you file a DMCA notice

Many issues can be resolved quickly with a straightforward message. If you are not sure whether the material is infringing, or if you want an attribution or link adjusted, you can contact us first. If the matter involves clear infringement and you want a formal request, use the DMCA process below.

4) DMCA takedown notice (copyright complaint)

If you are a copyright owner (or authorized to act on behalf of one), you may send a DMCA takedown notice. To be effective, your notice should include the following information:

  • Your contact information: full legal name, email address, and (optional) phone number.
  • Identification of the copyrighted work: describe the work you claim is infringed (and include a URL or other proof of ownership if available).
  • Identification of the allegedly infringing material: the exact URL(s) on NameLibrary where the material appears.
  • A statement of good faith: that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  • A statement under penalty of perjury: that the information in your notice is accurate and you are the owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.
  • Your signature: an electronic signature is acceptable (typing your full legal name is usually sufficient).

Send DMCA notices to: [email protected]

Tip: Put “DMCA Notice” in the email subject line and include the URLs in plain text. It helps us process your request faster.

5) What we do after receiving a notice

  • We review: We confirm the URLs and assess the claim.
  • We act: If the notice is complete and the claim appears valid, we may remove or disable access to the material.
  • We document: We keep a record of notices for legal and operational purposes.
  • We may contact you: If we need clarification, we will request it by email.

6) Counter-notification

If you believe content was removed by mistake (for example, because you own the rights, you have permission, or the material is legally allowed), you may send a counter-notification. Counter-notifications should include:

  • Your contact information (full legal name and email).
  • The URL(s) of the material that was removed or disabled.
  • A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed due to mistake or misidentification.
  • Your consent to jurisdiction of an appropriate court, if required by the DMCA framework.
  • Your electronic signature (typing your legal name is typically sufficient).

Send counter-notifications to the same contact email above. If a counter-notification is valid, we may restore the content as permitted by law, unless the complaining party initiates legal action.

7) Repeat infringer policy

Where required, we may restrict or block users who repeatedly submit infringing content or abuse our submission channels. We prefer not to. But we will protect the integrity of the Site.

8) Where this fits with our site rules

This DMCA / Copyright Policy is part of our overall site rules. For general conditions of use, permitted sharing, and limitations of liability, see our Terms & Conditions.
